Lemonade - Pure & Simple

I am often amazed at the great lengths that are gone to to reproduce something as natural and simple as lemonade.  My recipe has three ingredients: water, lemon and honey.  Can it get any easier than that?  Do yourself a favour and avoid the chemicals and other undesirable ingredients found in powder mixes.  Make your own lemonade!

For those of you who are interested in the ingredient lists on two popular brands of lemonade read on.  For those of you who just want to make delicious lemonade skip to the recipe!

The ingredient list on Country Time Lemonade is as follows:

Sugar, Fructose, Citric Acid, contains less than 2% of Maltodextrin, Natural Flavor, Ascorbic Acid, (Vitamin C), Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate, Sodium Citrate, Magnesium Oxide, Calcium Fumarate, Soy Lecithin, Artificial Color, Yellow 5, Tocopherol (Preserves Freshness).  Contains:  Soy.

And, the ingredients in Crystal Light were not to be found ANYWHERE on the Kraft Website....   Curious!  So with a little digging this is what I found, keeping in mind the range of flavours and products produced by Crystal Light.

Crystal Light is sweetened with aspartame, acesulfame potassim and a small amount of sugar.  It also contains Citric Acid, Potassium Citrate & Sodium Citrate, Magnesium Oxide, Natural Flavour, Soy Lecithin, Artificial Colour, and BHA (a preservative).

Lemonade made with honey

Lemonade

  • 2 litres water
  • 3/4 cup honey or 1/2 cup sugar
  • 3-4 lemons, or optionally 1/2 cup lemon juice, not from concentrate

In a small sauce pan, combine 1/2 cup water and either honey or sugar, heating and stirring until dissolved.

Add lemon juice to a pitcher, add warm honey/sugar syrup to the pitcher and fill the remainder with water.

You may have to adjust the amount of sweetener or lemon to your own taste!

See!  It is that easy!
